- Overview
The purpose of using potassium ions in drilling fluids is to stabilize shale and inhibit swelling clays. Therefore, the potassium ion concentration must be accurately determined in order to control the performance of the drilling fluid. This hand-cranked centrifuge is used to determine the potassium ion content in drilling fluid filtrates when the potassium ion concentration exceeds 5,000 mg/L or the KCl concentration exceeds 3.5 lb/bbl. After precipitating the potassium ions with perchlorate in the centrifuge tube, the volume of the precipitate is measured, and the potassium ion content is read from a standard calibration curve.
